Original abstract

Introduction Women remain a minority in taxi driving, and evidence from medium-sized European cities is scarce. Understanding how gendered working conditions intersect with safety, health and occupational culture is essential for transport policy. Methods An exploratory qualitative study was conducted in Zaragoza (Spain). A professionally moderated focus group with five licensed or trainee women taxi drivers was audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed using double coding. Analysis focused on work organisation, safety, health and gendered interactions within a masculinised occupation. Results Seven themes emerged: (1) autonomy and family capital as routes of entry; (2) flexibility that supports caregiving yet extends working hours; (3) night shifts concentrating both earnings and situational risks; (4) safety practices reliant on radio communication, GPS and peer coordination; (5) persistent micro-doubts about competence despite gradual normalisation; (6) peer support and women's networks as protective resources; and (7) gaps in pregnancy protection for self-employed drivers. Flexibility acted both as a resource and a burden, and safety remained contingent on individual strategies rather than structural measures. Conclusions In this Zaragoza specific focus group, participants described intersecting challenges linked to time, risk, technology and gender norms, with potential implications for occupational health, safety and retention. Policy options include better integration of safety equipment, recognition of pregnancy-related risks, and targeted onboarding and mentoring to enhance conflict management, reduce exposure and improve service quality.
