Original abstract

This study explores the constraints influencing non-visitation and revisit intention at Remembrance Centre Camp Westerbork, a prominent dark tourism site in the Netherlands. The method employed a qualitative semi-structured interview of thirteen respondents. The research draws on the Hierarchical Model of Leisure Constraints in combination with previous findings of constraints within a dark tourism context. It focuses on three categories: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and structural constraints. Key findings indicate that intrapersonal constraints – such as traumatic memory, emotions of fear and depression – hinder potential visitors from visiting. Emotional intensity mainly influences revisit intentions, with mainly negative affective experiences impacting whether past visitors would return. A more nuanced intrapersonal constraint arose called ‘situational readiness', where visitors recognized the site's importance but hesitated due to not having enough mental space, the right timing or preparation. The interpersonal constraints an individual faces relate to social influences on decision-making, such as the need to visit a site with others or the opinions of relatives and friends. Structural constraints – such as time and distance – play a dominant role in hindering first-time visitation. Particularly, a lack of information as well as competing priorities further exacerbates this, especially among younger generations. The study provides empirical implications.
