Original abstract

Abstract Connected Transportation (CT) applications are being deployed world-wide to enhance the quality of life of all citizens and improve city services. They offer a broad panoply of functions in the areas of safety, efficiency, security, comfort and data collection, to state only few. However, existing studies typically analyze CT applications and communication technologies separately, and lack a systematic link between application requirements and technology capabilities. To address this gap, we conduct a large literature review of the past decade, and propose a comprehensive taxonomy of CT applications explicitly designed from a telecommunication perspective, integrating key requirements like latency, data rate, range or bandwidth and a systematic mapping between applications and wireless communication technologies. The results highlight the suitability of different technologies depending on application requirements, with cellular networks such as LTE and 5G supporting a large range of applications. The approach is supported by an open database and reproducible tools made available to the community.
