Original abstract
‘The Errant City: Ghosts, Monsters, and Myths in the Silver Lands’ is an ethnographic thesis that takes Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires [Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, CABA] as its central object of anthropological concern to think through how Argentina illustrates the ways in which modernity itself has been cast as crisis, of both tradition, and of the promise of an imagined utopian future. The city is approached as a series of situated and circulating stories, and the thesis develops a ‘method of encounter’ which is designed to negotiate the multiple and diverging narratives that exist. The research marries a focus on the modernist capital of Argentina with a concern for how an anthropologist might develop methods devised to understand themodern world. The thesis draws together a wide range of sources and archival documents to produce inter-scalar encounters that arise through the dialectical collision of concepts, narratives, myths, memories and reflections that are brought into conversation across distance, proximity, intimacy, and connection. The ethnography produces interpretations of and about the city through both its modernist imaginaries and the everyday conversations of my interlocutors. Their testimonies complicate established narratives to illustrate that the city is not composed of a singular perspective, but rather entails infinite perspectives bound together in a polyvalent and incomplete constellation of narratives as they are mutually implicated. In doing so, the thesis is woven together from a sum of heterogeneous elements that inevitably produce their own internal ‘oppositions’ and ‘contradictions’. Rather than attempting to resolve these contradictions, the thesis embraces the notion of ‘incompleteness’ to complicate understandings of the ‘everyday’ and challenge the text’s own procedures and modes of explaining. Through the series of ethnographic encounters and the perspectives of research participants, the thesis emphasises how histories emerge, not as definitive accounts but as partial, situated, and often contradictory narratives that are continuously enacted, interpreted and felt. One of the tasks of the thesis’s historical method is not to ‘do history’ but to undo it. To do so, the thesis aspires to understand how histories are a living force revealed in the everyday present.
