Original abstract

This master’s thesis focuses on a comparative analysis of Gothic and Dark Academia literary genres. Gothic literature has, since its origins in the 18th century, evolved and adapted to the public’s fears and anxieties brought on by the sociopolitical climate and its changes. It has thus become a versatile genre that is difficult to define in simple terms. Dark Academia is a new and developing genre arguably started by Donna Tartt’s The Secret History, which gained significance during the COVID-19 pandemic. In my thesis I assess and present the core elements of the Gothic genre as a whole and draw parallels between Gothic and Dark Academia literature, establishing the latter as a descendant of the former. The comparison is based on the identification of key elements shared by the two genres (the setting, the Sublime, Terror and Horror, the Uncanny, doubling, abjection, the haunting of the past or the manifestations of the supernatural, and textual transgressions) and supported by direct examples from the four staple Dark Academia novels: The Secret History by Donna Tartt, If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio, Babel, or the Necessity of Violence: An Arcane History of Oxford Translators’ Revolution by R. F Kuang, and Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo.
