Original abstract

The rising cases of street-displaced children, popularly known as "Skolombo Boys," in Calabar metropolis has become a critical public security concern. Calabar was once reputed as one of the most peaceful and tourist friendly cities in Nigeria, is now experiencing a disturbing rise in criminality, particularly burglary, armed robbery, and car vandalism activities linked to gangs of displaced street children. This study examined the nexus between street-displaced children and three specific criminal activities: arm robbery, burglary, and car vandalism in Calabar metropolis. The study is anchored on Robert Merton's Strain Theory. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The sample size for study was 400 respondents drawn from law enforcement agencies, residents, and business operators within Calabar metropolis, selected through stratified and purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through the administration of self-structured questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and tables, and hypotheses were tested using Chi-Square Analysis. Based on the findings, the study revealed a strong relationship between the activities of street-displaced children and the escalating rates of burglary, armed robbery, and car vandalism in the metropolis. The study recommends among others, the establishment of a State-Coordinated Street Children Rehabilitation and Reintegration Programme, strengthening of community policing frameworks, and the enactment and enforcement of a Child Abandonment and Neglect Law in Cross River State to address the root causes of street displacement and its criminal consequences.
