Original abstract
This sociolinguistic study explores the complex linguistic landscape of contemporary Georgia, emphasizing the influence of Russian and English on the Georgian language. Drawing on the Dictionary of Foreign Words (Tchabashvili, 1989), which contains over 15,000 entries, the study investigates the etymology of Russian-derived words in Georgian, tracing their origins and reflecting on the historical influence of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union. The analysis highlights how Russian borrowings were transmitted through both direct interaction and as intermediary terms from European languages. Additionally, the study examines English borrowings, sourced from the Dictionary of Barbarisms, focusing on how globalization and Georgia’s Western political alignment have led to the integration of English into various sectors of society. Special attention is given to linguistic phenomena such as barbarisms and necessary borrowings that arose due to the absence of equivalent Georgian terms. These linguistic shifts underscore the broader sociopolitical context of Georgia’s post-Soviet transformation, where language policy and geopolitical changes continue to shape national identity. By analyzing these foreign influences, the study provides insights into how language acts as both a symbol of cultural continuity and a tool for adaptation in the face of globalizing forces. This research offers a dynamic view of Georgia’s evolving linguistic identity within the larger framework of sociolinguistic change.
