Original abstract
The article addresses the issue of genocide against Ukraine, perpetrated by the Russian Federation. Acts of extreme mass violence are accompanied by a clear symbolic component which operates with signs and meanings, weaponizing them. The key objectives of the study are to identify the content and structure of the ideology of the Russian Federation, and describe the tools used to destroy Ukrainian identity during the Russian-Ukrainian war. The study applies methods of qualitative analysis of Russian public discourse, focusing on the identification of ideologically salient meanings. The Russian myth of great power is capable of generating corresponding narratives and imbuing the destructive actions of the authorities with meaning. Beyond this myth, Russian ideology comprises a set of archaic ideas and criminal attitudes. From a semiotic perspective, genocidal practices can be examined systematically, focusing on the aggressor’s broad attempts to eradicate Ukrainian identity. Special attention is devoted to reconstructing the basic meanings of Russian imperial ideology, its connections with Stalinism, and its parallels with the genocidal actions of the German Nazis. Using Stalin’s “purges” as an example, the processes of dehumanization of Ukrainians are examined and their conceptual connection with contemporary Russian propaganda is demonstrated. In describing the means of destroying Ukrainian identity, we consider the violent changes in cultural and educational policy in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. Considerable emphasis is placed on the analysis of the semantics and pragmatics of the language of threats in public incitement to genocide. The authors highlight the effectiveness of further applying Speech Act Theory in the legal substantiation of genocide crimes.
