Original abstract
Vocabulary development has long been regarded as fundamental element of successful English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction.Vocabulary knowledge underpins all four language skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing and plays a decisive role in learners' ability to comprehend input and produce meaningful output. In EFL settings, where learners often have little or no exposure to the target language beyond the classroom, systematic and purposeful vocabulary instruction becomes particularly important.Studies indicate that insufficient vocabulary knowledge can negatively affect academic achievement, communicative competence, and overall language proficiency. Therefore, the present study investigates the role of vocabulary development in EFL instruction, analyses factors that contribute to language proficiency while also considering both established and emerging influences that may shape successful vocabulary acquisition.Furthermore, it explores the importance of vocabulary depth development in EFL instruction highlighting the need to foster it in EFL teaching and emphasizing that aligning foreign language learning more closely with the processes that underly natural language acquisition, can enhance more advanced lexical competence. This article argues that effective vocabulary instruction should not be treated as an addition to grammar-focused instruction, but rather as a central mechanism of language development in EFL/ESL contexts. Moreover, instead of viewing vocabulary as a fixed list of words to be learned, the research views lexical knowledge as a constantly developing system formed through exposure, use, repetition and rich contextual input. In today's multilingual world, without a well-developed active vocabulary, students are unlikely to engage effectively in communication, whether within native-speaking communities or in the academic setting of higher education institutions.
