Original abstract
This study aims to assess the potential impacts of personal Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) on people’s travel behaviors when vehicle sharing in household and network of friends is allowed. Several hypotheses are developed to address research questions using a simulated environment in the TRANUS land use and transportation interaction (LUTI) framework. To estimate the anticipated effects of AVs, we use the transportation model embedded in this LUTI simulator for the British city of Swindon by analyzing three hypothetical scenarios. Sensitivity analyses are also performed by increasing AV occupancy, speed, and waiting time to test the robustness of the calibrated models and travel demand elasticity of AV deployment. The results indicate that AVs would slightly increase people’s overall travel demand and trip generation by improving accessibility and relocating households to surrounding localities. Meanwhile, AVs are found to reduce overall trip segments by providing seamless and convenient movement and encouraging shared rides. Results also show that AVs are likely to reduce vehicle ownership, vehicle travel distance, passenger hours traveled, vehicle hours traveled, and combined travel costs. It is theorized that these reductions are driven by shrinking solo driving, encouraging shared mobility, lowering empty trips, ensuring seamless passenger transportation, and population exurbanization. In contrast, PKT remains almost unchanged after the introduction of AVs. However, AVs would lead to a decline in public and active transportation use presumably by offering convenience to travelers, reinforcing relocation from inner city neighborhoods, and providing low opportunity cost of travel for outlying communities. Finally, this study offers valuable insights and policy implications for informed decision-making considering the anticipated effects of AVs in transportation systems.
