Original abstract

This research project is an investigation of an important problematic in current journalism: how can freelance journalists become interested in professional ethics issues in their everyday work -especially since in the profession they have chosen (or on the way into this profession) a mandatory engagement with professional ethics does not necessarily have to take place?Historical and current developments show that self-reflection is necessary. The question is: How can it be encouraged and sustainably promoted? The conditions of a postmodern working world, including the increasing digital character of everyday working life, which is leading to a massive change in the public discourse space -keyword: social media -must be considered. In the first chapter, past and present examples are outlined of unethical professional behaviour by journalists and the reasons why journalism can be understood as an industry in crisis due to internal and external developments. In this context, the term "fake news" also plays an important role, which on the one hand refers to the deliberate dissemination of false news (also) by journalists, but on the other hand is also used (particularly by right-wing populist and right-wing radical circles) to discredit undesirable journalistic media. This is followed by a look at professional journalistic self-image and the journalistic professional ethics underlying this self-image.Two constitutive contemporary historical reference points are examined in more detail: on the one hand, the Gladbeck hostage drama (1988), and on the other hand, the "Spiegel affair" (1962/63), which also led to a ground-breaking ruling by the Federal Constitutional Court (1966) on the subject of press freedom and journalistic responsibility for the German media landscape. The second chapter focuses on the changes that journalistic work is subject to today, especially under the perspective of normative professionalization. The developments described here include, above all, the formative changes brought about by life and work in postmodern society, which has long been understood as a digital society and, with its changing working conditions, requires a great deal of adaptation, particularly from those in the service professions. These changes are massively noticeable for journalists, as they operate in the border area between the capitalist interests of media companies and the socio-political task of journalistic observation, description
