Original abstract
Learned helplessness is a foundational concept in psychology, originally developed to explain the effects of repeated exposure to uncontrollable aversive events on behavior and adaptation. Over the past sixty years, the theory has evolved through successive reformulations, accumulating both conceptual depth and ambiguity. In this critical review, we revisit the historical development of learned helplessness, outlining its core mechanisms while highlighting the tensions that have emerged across theoretical traditions. Particular attention is given to the past three decades, during which learned helplessness has been increasingly reinterpreted, expanded, and applied across diverse research areas and real-world contexts. It is timely to examine how these developments have transformed the scope and meaning of the concept, sometimes in ways that depart from its original foundations. While analyzing this trajectory, we identify key points of convergence and divergence in the field and consider how learned helplessness continues to inform contemporary models of motivation, resilience, and adaptation. Finally, we propose an integrative framework to clarify its current relevance and offer directions for future research, grounded in coherent theoretical principles and informed by empirical insights.
