Original abstract

The Shunde Lantern-Wine Festival (“Yin Deng Jiu”) in South China presents a compelling case of community-led food heritagization, having transformed from a clan-based ritual into a large-scale charitable event centered on communal banquets and lantern auctions. Drawing on social practice theory, this study examines how community self-organization operates as the practical competence that drives the recursive interplay of materials, competences, and meanings sustaining this living food heritage. Based on mixed methods including 58 stakeholder interviews and long-term fieldwork since 2006, findings reveal that volunteer-led councils convert expanded material resources into re-signified cultural meanings, channeling auction proceeds and banquet participation toward public welfare and cross-generational solidarity. Theoretically, the study advances food heritage scholarship by positioning community self-organization within the competence element and demonstrating its recursive effects on material abundance and meaning innovation. Empirically, it demonstrates that grassroots food traditions achieve sustainable heritagization through community-powered governance rather than top-down commercialization, offering a replicable framework for sustaining intangible food heritage in rapidly modernizing societies.
