Original abstract

Guaranteeing the farmers’ family welfare is a necessary path for achieving sustainable development in areas that rely on land resources, and promoting land trusteeship is a Chinese style development proposition for guiding the cotton farmers’ family welfare. Based on survey data from 932 cotton farming households in Xinjiang, this paper constructs a theoretical model to explain the motivations behind land trusteeship and its relationship with improvements in family welfare. An endogenous switching regression (ESR) model is used to examine the impact of land trusteeship on cotton farmers’ family welfare, and a mediation effect model is employed to explore the driving mechanisms. The results show that favorable resource endowments, social conditions, and enhanced personal abilities encourage cotton farmers to participate in land trusteeship to reduce costs and increase benefits. After addressing potential sample selection bias, land trusteeship is found to increase household income and consumption expenditure by 22.93 and 77.44%, respectively, promoting an overall improvement in cotton farmers’ household welfare. Heterogeneity analysis indicates a significant positive relationship between land trusteeship and welfare. However, if farmers obtain membership status without receiving promotion from trusteeship service organizations, their consumption expenditure may be negatively affected. Further analysis finds that non-agricultural employment partially mediates the process by which land trusteeship improves welfare. By freeing labor, land trusteeship allows engagement in non-agricultural work and income generation, thus enhancing family welfare.
