Prologue: Junaid Hafeez, 13 March 2013, Multan The bus left Multan (south Punjab) three hours ago. On board, a 26-yearold man is looking anxiously out the window as it approaches Lahore. His name is Junaid Hafeez. The police in his hometown had just lodged a first information report (FIR), charging him with blasphemy, for ‘[saying] vulgar things against Islam, [making] mockery of the life of the Prophet and [attacking] the teachings of the Quran’ on Facebook (FB).1 To ‘defile the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’ is a crime punishable by death as per section 295-C of Pakistan's Penal Code (PPC). Usually, alleged blasphemers are imprisoned for years before a trial might – and it is rare – clear them of the accusations (ICJ 2015). The risk is also of being lynched by a vigilante crowd. Ishq-e-rasul (love for the Prophet) is a powerful social emotion, and tohin-e-risalat (insult against the Prophet) can provoke public anger all over the country, but in Punjab2 in particular, various types of moral entrepreneurs have been actively politicising this deep-seated religious sensitivity since colonial times. Driving through the (mine)fields of Punjab and its emotional-institutional landscape (Blom 2008), the young academic is on the run to save his life. Born into a lower-middle-class family of Sunni Rajput in Rajanpur, a small agricultural city south of Multan with a literacy rate of 36 per cent, Junaid was an admirable exception: he achieved a record GPA score in his BA Honors programme in English literature from the Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) in Multan, had several poetry publications to his name and his postgraduate degree from Jackson State University in American literature, photography and theatre was fully funded by the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship.
