Original abstract
At first glance the battlecruiser HMAS Australia appears to be an unlikely model for the AUKUS agreement, however this article argues that it offers useful insight into enduring features of Australian maritime strategy. The ship’s wartime service reflects a long-standing tension between national self-reliance and engagement in maritime alliances. While Australia’s strategic partners have changed over time, the country’s geography and demography ensure this duality remains central to its defence policy and continues to shape the strategic logic behind Australia’s efforts to acquire nuclear powered submarines.
