Original abstract

The Indian diaspora is the second-largest diaspora group after the Chinese diaspora. The presence of children forming a small but significant portion of the diaspora can not be denied. The children in the diaspora would also have experienced their unique set of challenges, but the discourse on the Indian diaspora has paid little attention to the experience of children. While there are several studies on the condition of indentured labourers, on diaspora communities in the age of globalisation, on the dynamics of transnationalism, and the predicament of women, children are rarely discussed. This paper attempts to identify and analyse the issues faced by children from diaspora communities through a study of Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake and Meera Syal's Anita and Me. Focusing on the representation of childhood experiences narrated in these two novels, this paper attempts to trace how childhood experiences shape the trajectories of identity, aspiration, and challenges within and outside the home.
