Original abstract

Teens today have an unusually high regard for physical and emotional safety. They tend to take the safe approach with respect to education, relationships and social life. The primary motivation comes from protecting themselves from risks and burdensome commitments that may distract or hinder them from achieving their goal of economic security. In this review of chapter 6, “Insulated but Not Intrinsic: More Safety and Less Community” of the book “iGen: Why Today's Super-Connected Kids Are Growing Up Less Rebellious, More Tolerant, Less Happy--and Completely Unprepared for Adulthood--and What That Means for the Rest of Us”, Jean Twenge tackles the overarching emphasis on emotional security by highlighting how the concept of ‘safe spaces’ has been distorted. Instead of engaging in healthy debate, today’s iGen’ers are offended by simply hearing another point of view. Since teens today are less likely to face physical violence, unlike in the past, this review sheds light on how iGen views danger approaching from emotions and speech. Emotional violence has now upstaged physical violence.
