Original abstract

Chapter Two outlines the analytical framework of the book, contextualising it in the tradition of cultural studies and critical sociology. The chapter argues that many teachings of the cultural studies of the 1980s and 1990s have relatively little to offer when analysing popular culture that focuses on the wealthy and powerful. In today’s televisual context, dominated by streaming platforms, immersive binge-watching and a superfluity of representations of the rich, theories of bygone decades that emphasised the emancipatory potential of popular culture cry out for re-evaluation. To unravel the paradoxical situation in which the meritocratic middle and working classes are in love with dramas depicting the rich and the privileged, the chapter emphasises the analytical necessity to refocus on the culturally hegemonic. It argues for a need to combine classical methods of cultural critique and ideology studies – like the practice of symptomatic reading and the concept of reading formation – with recent insights of cognitively oriented media scholars who have stressed the often uniform ways in which today’s popular culture is consumed. The chapter discusses how today’s popular culture builds on a strategic use of ambivalence, suggesting critical tools for analysing the role of such ambivalences in the current social totality and its structures of feeling. The chapter asks what if the critical potential embedded in contemporary popular culture is itself part of the process through which today’s status quo reproduces itself.
