Original abstract
This article examines how China is imagined by neighboring Asian societies through a close reading of Super China , a widely circulated documentary in Korea. Framed by Bill Nichols's theorization of documentary modes and informed by Western and Chinese scholarship on East Asian regional relations, cross-cultural communication and the “China Threat” discourse, the study argues that the film constructs China as a hegemonic superpower extending beyond Asia. Particular attention is paid to the interplay between expository narration, the deployment of archival footage, and patterns of structural editing, which together authorize specific claims about China's economic reach, military ambition, and cultural influence. Situated within contemporary Korean debates about China, the documentary's representational strategies reveal how media discourses mediate regional perceptions and anxieties surrounding China's rise. By demonstrating how cinematic form intersects with geopolitical narratives, the article highlights the ways in which Super China participates in shaping a Korean understanding of China's expanding role in both the regional and global order.
