Original abstract

Urban mobility challenges in Nigeria have worsened due to the decline of organized public transport systems, prompting many to turn to commercial motorcycles for intra-city travel. While these motorcycles have filled a transportation, gap created by inadequate public transit, their increasing use has led to a notable rise in traffic-related injuries and fatalities. In places like Ile Ife, where motorcycles are a key mode of transportation, accidents involving commercial riders have become a pressing public safety issue. This study investigates the factors that contribute to commercial motorcycle accidents in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, aiming to identify and analyze the root causes behind these incidents. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to 219 motorcycle operators and 108 residents. Both descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including chi-square and principal component analyses, were utilized to analyze the responses. The findings indicated that 49.2% of participants had experienced accidents, with significant associations found related to factors such as marital status, age, education, and household size (p < 0.05). Seven principal components were identified as critical factors: human and environmental influences, operational aspects, mechanical and attitudinal factors, socio physical elements, maintenance and safety control, general safety issues, and age demographics. The study advocates for stricter regulations, enforcement of safety standards, and the creation of dedicated motorcycle lanes to improve urban road safety and transportation efficiency in Nigeria.
