Original abstract
As an important aspect of consumer environmental behavior, this paper explores the determinants of consumer environmental responsibility for sustainable practices, specifically consumers' eco-conscious purchasing behavior towards energy-saving appliances, as the aim was conceptualized based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Value-Beliefs-Norms (VBN) Theory. In accordance with the survey methodology, we gathered 301 consumers' data in Khulna City, Bangladesh. To find out the factors among different consumer groups, we employed correlation analysis initially to know the variables’ correlation, followed by principal component analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis to further understand consumer environmental responsibility. The findings from principal component analysis indicate that three major factors ─ eco-conscious responsibility, energy-conscious responsibility, and responsibility for eco-friendly consumption adaptation correspond to the consumers' environmental responsibility when consumers purchase energy-saving appliances. Further hierarchical cluster analysis demonstrates that three consumer groups ─ highly eco-conscious consumers with strong purchasing power, moderately eco-conscious consumers with average purchasing power, and consumers with low purchasing power and minimal engagement in eco-friendly behaviors prioritize environmental responsibility, taking into account their socio-economic status. Although this study was carried out in an urban setting, the results are more likely to be associated with customers who frequently visit the market. In order to effectively promote environmentally conscious consumer behavior, insightful information from this study will assist policymakers, managers, and environmentalists in creating practical plans for advancing sustainability and incorporating policy changes, marketing strategy, and community involvement.
