Original abstract

The imminent transition from conventional automobiles to fully autonomous vehicles (AVs) is a critical aspect of urban city planning, and understanding the public’s attitudes towards them is fundamental to their successful deployment and adoption. In car-centric urban environments where personal vehicle use dominates, the transition to autonomous vehicles (AVs) and FAVs presents both technological promise and behavioral resistance. This study aims to supplement the existing body of knowledge by exploring attitudes towards FAVs through the analysis of survey data collected from residents of Arlington, a car-centric suburban city in Texas. A two-stage multivariate approach that integrated factor analysis and cluster analysis was applied to better understand prospective consumers’ willingness to adopt FAVs, and psychological and experiential variables were used to identify distinct population segments with varying levels of receptivity to them: traditional drivers (37% of the sample), tech-trusting skeptics (34%), and pragmatic adopters (29%). The findings emphasize the need for tailored outreach efforts and targeted engagement strategies to facilitate a smooth and adaptive pathway towards the deployment of autonomous driving systems in car-dependent cities.
