This study examines the Tarim River Basin irrigation district as a research area, utilizing 1,278 micro-level household survey data to investigate the impact of governance structures on farmers ‘behavioral choices in ecological agriculture models and their underlying mechanisms. Key findings include: (1) Governance structures significantly positively influence farmers’ participation in ecological agriculture models; (2) Heterogeneity analysis reveals that governance structures exert stronger driving effects on younger generations, higher-educated farmers, and those with larger production scales; (3) In terms of mechanisms, value identification, benefit expectations, and normative pressure play significant mediating roles in how governance structures influence farmers ‘behaviors; (4) Further analysis considering other factors demonstrates that farmers’ digital literacy and rule internalization significantly enhance the impact of governance structures on behavioral choices.
