Original abstract

With the shift toward a high-quality Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China’s foreign economic policy has undergone significant changes. In recent years, market-driven investment by private enterprises has expanded, particularly in ASEAN. Meanwhile, Japanese companies are reducing their reliance on China as an export production base against the backdrop of structural changes in the Chinese market and geopolitical risks. Their business focus is shifting from the final goods market to upstream sectors such as materials and components. Particularly in the automotive sector, the rapid growth of Chinese manufacturers’ electric vehicles (EVs) has not only caused Japanese automakers to lose significant market share in China but also exposed them to aggressive competition from Chinese players in ASEAN, especially Thailand. Riding the wave of Thailand’s EV incentive policies, companies like BYD and Great Wall Motors are rapidly expanding local production. Consequently, Japanese automakers’ share is declining sharply even in Thailand, long considered a stronghold for Japanese brands. Reflecting these changes, Sino-Japanese economic relations are shifting from competition within the domestic markets of both countries to competition in third-country markets, primarily within ASEAN. Simultaneously, Japanese companies are leveraging their strengths in B2B sectors – while collaborating with Chinese firms – to establish themselves as suppliers that address bottlenecks in Chinese industries. This includes providing semiconductor materials, high-performance resins, and EV components. Furthermore, the formation of new supply chains linking ASEAN and India presents fresh growth opportunities for Japanese companies. Japanese industry is advancing a structural shift from a final goods-centered B2C model to a B2B model, providing materials, components, and equipment. While responding to this new phase of Sino-Japanese competition, it is also exploring market-based cooperation between Japan and China.
