Original abstract

This paper explores the potential synergies and conflicts between bicycles and autonomous vehicles (AVs) within the context of sustainable urban transport. Based on academic literature, policy reports, and industry publications, the paper assess how AV deployment may affect factors known to promote cycling, including roadway safety, bikeway infrastructure and roadway design, mixed land use, integration with public transport, and car-restraint policies. AVs may improve cyclist safety by reducing human driving errors and adhering more consistently to traffic regulations. However, many unresolved challenges remain, such as communication between cyclists and AVs, curbside management, or the possibility of AV-induced increased vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and suburban sprawl. Impacts of AVs will depend on government policies and planning decisions. Cities seeking to promote more sustainable transport should integrate AVs in a way that supports walking, cycling, and public transport. Continued investment in proven bicycle-supportive policies and infrastructure will remain essential.
