Original abstract
We investigate the relationship between social media activity of presidential candidate Donald J. Trump in 2024 and short-term equity market dynamics. Using one-minute intraday data for SPY and tweets posted by him during the 2024 U.S. presidential campaign, we analyze how tweet sentiment, as measured with VADER algorithm, content, and timing are associated with market volatility and returns over various intraday horizons, ranging from 1 to 30 minutes. We find that tweets are associated with increases in short-term market volatility. Post-tweet volatility rises by approximately 33% relative to the pre-tweet levels. This effect is asymmetric, as negative tweets generate larger and more significant volatility responses than positive ones. However, we find no evidence of statistically significant abnormal returns following tweets across various time windows.
