Original abstract
Numerous studies show the bond between older adults (> 65yo) and their dogs can enhance guardian well-being, however there are few studies looking at the welfare related care practices of dogs living with older guardians. This study qualitatively investigated factors influencing the intentions of 13 older adult guardians in South Australia to engage in management practices that support their dogs’ welfare. Semi-structured interviews investigating animal welfare provisions, based on the Five Domains Model, were undertaken in the homes of 13 dog guardians aged 65 years or more and thematically analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, with themes developed inductively and subsequently organised in relation to the Theory of Planned Behaviour. Older adult guardians described strong commitment to their dogs’ welfare, reflected in the theme “they’re not just a dog to me”. Whilst excelling in certain areas older guardians did face specific challenges, particularly in their perceived behavioural control for some behaviours, revealed in the theme “capacity shapes care”. Some themes such as “knowledge as a determinant of care” were likely not exclusive to older adults, and younger guardians may have similar attitudes, subjective norms, and enablers/barriers to optimal welfare observed in this study. Through utilising the dual-framework approach of the Five Domains and Theory of Planned Behaviour, this study identified the complex, value-driven decisions of older adult guardians, shaped by past experiences, current beliefs, and emotions, and how these relate to their welfare-related care practices. Guardians play a central role in shaping the conditions that influence their dog’s welfare, this study contributes to advancing the understanding of dog welfare and provides foundation for future research.
