Original abstract
For older people, decisions about driving are complex, often involving family members and healthcare professionals. The study developed a decision aid to support older people in making informed decisions about maintaining or retiring from driving. This paper explicates the theoretical frameworks, partnership-driven principles, and techniques underpinning the development of a decision aid for older drivers using co-design. An iterative sequential seven-phase process was undertaken over multiple co-design cycles. Key to success were established partnerships with two advisory panels – a group of older people and professionals representing nine disciplines. Triangulation of evidence from exploratory studies, literature searches, prototype testing, and advisory panel feedback determined the purpose, content, format, target audience, presentation, and marketing strategy of a decision aid for older drivers. Diverse perspectives were sought through a range of interactive co-design methods and activities to facilitate prototype development, assess acceptability and feasibility, refine the final decision aid versions, and review associated marketing materials. Flexibility in the level and type of involvement was crucial when partnering with older people and interdisciplinary professionals. Recommendations are made to guide future co-design approaches with older people and other stakeholders.
